  • The Romans

Kestrel Class and Falcon Class had the opportunity to visit a Roman Fortress and Baths in Caerleon, Wales to find out more about life of Ancient Romans in Britain. On the trip we visited the museum and had a talk from the Museum Guide about what life was like at The Fortress. In the museum there were lots of artefacts like money, pottery and armour which gave us an indication of the daily lives of those living around Caerleon at that time. We then spent time learning about medicine used in Ancient Rome and had the opportunity to try on some child sized armour in a barrack room. After lunch we walked through the village to The Roman Baths and The Amphitheatre where we found out about some of the things Ancient Romans enjoyed as entertainment. We had two fantastic trips and the children seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves as well as further develop their knowledge about this fascinating period of history.

  • Rocks, Soils and Fossils

This half term we will be learning through two Science topics in the run up to Christmas. The first is ‘Rocks, Soils and Fossils’ and then ‘Light’. The children will learn about rocks, soils and fossils  through scientific investigation and discovery, in a practical way. The learning will be enriched through our English work on Mary Anning who discovered an Ichthyosaur as well as many other exciting discoveries on Lyme Regis Beach. The children will get the opportunity to learn about different rocks and their uses and use their computing skills to develop a database of rocks. The children will have the opportunity to create some pieces of art inspired by their knowledge of rocks and fossils too.

  • Newspaper Bags!

In Year 3 we have been working on mass as part of our ‘Measures’ topic in Maths.

One of the challenges was to make a shopping bag out of newspaper to carry the total mass of some food items.

We worked in teams of 4 or 5 and had great fun using our D&T skills to meet this challenge!

  • Charterhouse Residential

Kestrel and Falcon classes had a fantastic time during the Year 3 annual residential trip to Charterhouse last week.

The weather was on our side which made the week even better!

Activities the children took part in were Team-building exercises, Archery, Shelter-building, a Fantasy-trail (which involved taking risks and putting trust in your partner) and a Night-walk. It was a very physical 2 days which required pupils to work together, listen to and carry out instructions, be responsible for themselves and be more organised.  Some children found these skills more challenging to master than others!!

The overnight stay and mealtimes were also a great experience for the pupils as some had never stayed away overnight without their parents and some managed to try new foods!

All children were exceptionally well-behaved and we are very proud of them all for trying new things and overcoming hurdles set before them.
