PE & Sports

  • We believe it is important to provide pupils with opportunities to experience and develop skills in a wide range of sports during their first school years. Every class is timetabled for two PE lessons each week, some of which will take place indoors and others, outdoors. Our Physical Education curriculum provides a broad and balanced skill-building programme from reception to Year 4, including gymnastics, dance, athletics and games. All year groups also have 10 weeks of swimming lessons a year at the Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre. Qualified instructors take these lessons and parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost.

Our aim is to encourage every child to stay healthy through taking part in regular exercise and sporting activities.

    Additional sporting activities include:

    • Links with qualified sports coaches who teach some PE lessons
    • After –school sports clubs for Years 1 to 4 (on a rota basis) run by our qualified sports coach
    • Links with Cheddar Tennis Club who provide some coaching in school
    • Participation in Cheddar Valley events
    • An annual sports day, when all the children take part in both individual and team events
    • Huff & Puff activities at lunchtime, designed to promote physical activity
    • Residential trips to Kilve and Charterhouse in Years 3 & 4 enrich and extend the range of outdoor activities
    • Older children are also given the opportunity to participate in competitive events with other schools. In 2015 we won the Wells under-9 Soccer Festival and the Cheddar Under-9 tennis competition, as well as playing football and cricket matches against other local schools

In 2014-15, additional funding for PE has been made available via the School Sports Premium. Part of this funding has been used to fund a School sports co-ordinator in collaboration with Fairlands Middle School and our partner First Schools. The co-ordinator teaches some PE lessons at Cheddar First School and also organises inter-school sport festivals and after school enrichment activities.

In 2015 a partnership with Kings Leisure has also given the children opportunities to try ‘new’ sports and attend taster sessions at the Kings Leisure centre.
