English, Maths & Science

  • English

The development of language skills – speaking, listening, writing and reading – are fundamental to all the work we do.

Throughout the school, specific literacy teaching is based on the National Curriculum for English, and all classes have a daily Literacy lesson.

Reading is taught through guided and shared reading sessions with the aid of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. A multi-sensory approach is used to teaching phonics. We always try to convey to the children that all books are “reading books” and are a source of information, entertainment and pleasure. From their earliest days in school children are encouraged to bring a book home to share and read with their family.

Written work is for a variety of purposes including stories, poems, letters, leaflets, newspaper articles and other factual reports. Spelling, punctuation, handwriting and general grammar are all taught regularly.

  • Mathematics

Work in Mathematics follows the National Curriculum for Mathematics, ensuring continuity and progression throughout the school. Much emphasis is placed on the development of mental skills and the children are encouraged to use and apply their mathematical knowledge in practical and problem solving situations. The school is well resourced with an extensive range of equipment to support the children’s mathematical understanding. There are high expectations that all children will learn the basic number facts and multiplication facts and be able to recall them instantly by the time they leave the school.

  • Science

A practical ‘hands on’ approach is used to teach Science.

Children are given a wide range of experiences related to living things, materials and physical processes both inside and outside the classroom. In all activities they are encouraged to think as scientists, observing, classifying, measuring, predicting, recording, communicating, testing ideas and drawing conclusions.
